Fought and Company Bridge Girders Serve New Evacuation Route in Kivalina Alaska.

Kivalina, Alaska

Earlier this year STG Incorporated took delivery of four large bridge girders at a holding yard in Seattle, WA., where they were later loaded onto a barge and shipped by sea to Kivalina, Alaska. Each completed bridge girder span is over 360 feet and weighs approximately 50 tons.

Kivalina was featured in our January Newsfeed highlighting the struggle the local residents face on this barrier island off the Chukchi Sea 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Erosion caused by wave action and increases in the frequency and intensity of sea storms for several decades will eventually force residents to evacuate.

The bridge serves to provide safe passage for residents, while preserving the natural flow of ocean tide in and out of the Kivalina Lagoon. Rock and soil extracted from a nearby mine connects to the bridge. This new evacuation route designed to support the community’s relocation opened summer 2020.
